ABOUT US

ABOUT US

Broken Scar Productions (BSP) is an independent film and media production company based in Darlington, North East England.

BSP try to produce projects, including short and feature films, that are entertaining, thought provoking and hopefully outweigh any budget constraints by using our initiative, imagination and gut instincts. We also aim to utilise the stunning regional locations, of which we in this area of the UK are fortunate enough to have an abundance of.

We have some great projects, past, present and pencilled in for the future and by perusing this site we hope you will find something that you will want to see, or may even spark your imagination. If anything catches your eye, or there are any questions you want to ask, just get in touch via the Contact page.

The main project for 2017 is our new feature film "Sparrowhawk". We finished the principal shooting in April 2017, and are presently working on post production.  We hope to release Sparrowhawk either later in 2017 or early 2018. The film is directed by Mike Tweddle, DoP is Paul Robinson, second camera Sean Johnson, sound Terry Sharp, assistant director Kate McClean, photography Graham Bygate and was written by Mark Stephenson and Mike Tweddle. We are also very excited to announce that the score for the film will be written by Emmy nominated composer John Robert Wood (http://www.johnrobertwood.com/). With this feature film we have reached out far to find the right actors who have turned in astonishing performances and they  include Ken Wallace (Australia), Tony Howard (London), Chris Torretto (Northern Ireland), Stef Bricklebank (York) and local actors Kate Dale and Tim Crawshaw.

The premise for Sparrowhawk is a very stripped down concept, while the storyline and characters are both complex and difficult to second guess. The film is set in one location with only six actors in total. We spent a lot of time on the story and subsequent rewrites of the script to make it tight, interesting and unusual. We shot Sparrowhawk using Canon C300's at 4k and early rushes are so promising that to say we are excited about this new film is a total understatement. We truly believe we have made something, at least interesting, and possibly something pretty special so watch this space.

MIKE TWEDDLE

I grew up in Darlington, County Durham and still live nearby, feeling lucky and privileged to live in this exciting, beautiful part of the world where so much interesting and inspirational stuff goes on. I started writing a punk rock fanzine "Out of Control" when I was a teenager ,which featured great bands of the time such as Crass, the Wall, the Lurkers and local heroes No Future UK. After being sidetracked by motorbikes, music and all the usual kind of distractions for a few reckless years I returned to writing a music and political based fanzine "Inkslinger". We featured fantastic bands of that era such as the Wedding Present and the Shamen and Inkslinger brought us a tiny moment of infamy when we turned down an exclusive interview with the Stone Roses weeks before they became the biggest band of the decade! Inkslinger was also featured in a book about fanzines, mainly because we had written what the author believed was the most scathing review he had ever read (sorry Celestial Orgy but you were pants).

Following another hiatus due to travelling the world on a shoestring, meeting my partner Cath and starting a family, blagging a first class degree in Environmental Technology from Durham University and landing a job as a quarry inspector I returned to writing and began to dabble with ideas for novels. It was then that I was contacted by a crazy Swiss Barrister named Andy Gross who asked me to write the screenplay for his equally crazy movie "The Last Blast". Hopefully Andy and I are not quite finished working together yet and another equally crazy project will eventually come to light. Writing the Last Blast led me to write further short and full length scripts for other people and myself and eventually led to the desire to direct. My directorial debut was the short film "The Sign "(2009) followed by another short "Rise of the North Star" (2011) and eventually led to my first full length project "Damaged Goods" (2013). All of these projects were made with budgets that in reality are considered to be minuscule, however, that doesn't detract from the sense of pride we have towards those stories that we have brought to life. Following the release of Damaged Goods we put together a concept trailer for another full length feature "Last Fuel for Miles" (2015) which remains to be made. However, thanks to an amazingly kind benefactor and generous folk who helped with a Kickstarter campaign we managed to get the funds to make our latest full length feature project "Sparrowhawk"  which is intended to be released later in 2017 or early 2018.

I have also written a novel "Down in the Dark" (published 2010) and intend to publish my next novel "The Secret of Feedback" in 2017/18
